Downham Market Workhouse

Lauren Ephithite, Assistant Curator at Gressenhall has been working with a number of community groups around the county to explore other Workhouses history.

Gressenhall Workhouse was one of 22 workhouses in Norfolk. I have been working with Downham Market Heritage Group to research Downham Market Workhouse. Together we found out more about the building and the people who lived there. One thing which was really exciting was to find that there were similar things happening in Downham as there were at Gressenhall. One of my favourite stories from Downham Market Workhouse is that two inmates threatened the Master with an axe and iron bar!’

The research has formed a ‘pop up’ exhibition which will tour Downham Market, look out for it around the town! It is starting in the Library and will also be on display at the Downham Market Academy, the Methodist Church and Discover Downham. Further information about the workhouse forms part of the permanent display at Discover Downham.
